Modern Kick Plates

leave a comment »

Kick plates are an absolute necessity in most offices and retail stores, and even in some houses.  If you are one of those people who prefer to open doors with their feet, especially when your hands are full, then you understand how much damage the bottom of a door can sustain from this abuse.  Restaurants are notorious for using kick plates on their doors not only as a functional piece, but also to help keep the appearance of cleanliness.  Some homes are also starting to use kick plates in certain areas of their homes.  Most times these are used in basement areas like recreation rooms and playrooms, though some parents are also having them installed on doors into garages, back or side doors, and some kitchen doors.  People who have young children know how much of a hassle it can be to constantly be cleaning scuff marks off of doors from people who are too tired or unable to use a door knob instead of their feet to open doors.  The best thing about kick plates is that they are very simple and versatile.

We carry many different finishes so you can match them easily to the hardware you already have in your home.  We also have many different sizes available for both standard and more uncommon door sizes, eliminating the need to get a specialty piece made.  These kick plates are also available with two different mounting options.  While some people may find the security of screw mounted kick plates necessary, like in restaurants, the is another option.  Magnetic mount kick plates make it possible to save doors from scuffs and damage without having to add extra holes into them.  This is ideal for rental homes and even for apartment buildings.  Adhesive mounts are also available on most products.  Just let us know what mount option works best for you!

More From The Pot O’ Gold

leave a comment »

Here is another wonderful piece from our own pot of gold that we were fortunate enough to win in the most recent auction. This piece will be a little harder to market, since it’s more of a specialized piece, but I think the market is big enough that it won’t be too difficult to get a broad audience for it.

After all, flowers have been well loved for centuries, and often has special meaning for a variety of people. The design does limit the versatility of the piece slightly, but opens up several options that weren’t there before. A piece like this, perhaps in a different finish, or even an enamel one, would look absolutely darling in a nursery, or a little girl’s room. It is the type of piece that she probably wouldn’t grow out of, and would make a wonderful accent to the piece to hand down to her daughters or grand daughters one day.

Flower Knob

This would also be a wonderful piece to brighten up an otherwise dull kitchen, bathroom, or even guest bedroom. Floral motifs are becoming increasingly popular, and are extremely easy to accessorize. The trouble with designs like this can be an abundance of items available, and this can lead to an overwhelming feeling, especially when you are trying to find just the right piece to make the room complete, or just the right design to truly match a floral bedspread or curtains.

This piece would also look great on a potting table, or in a gardening shed for anyone that has a love of gardening and flowers. Perhaps they have a space dedicated in their garage just for their hobby and need a sturdy yet whimsical design to compliment it. This flower drawer pull is the perfect accent to finish the space. This will be available in a variety of finishes as well, ensuring the most versatility for it.

Ocean Inspired Drawer Pull

This is another piece that we were lucky enough to receive in the last auction surprise, and is easily one of the most unique ones we’ve ever had.  The design is that of  a more modern piece while maintaining the classicism of pieces we have once loved in grandparents and other relative’s homes.  We found this piece in decent shape, though it still needs some work before we can replicate it.

One of the most beautiful parts about this piece is the delicate swirls that surround the raised circle in the center.  My guess is that the artist was inspired by the gentle ocean waves, and decided to capture them forever in brass.  Of course, this decorative design element is also the most difficult to clean.  All of those little groves love to trap dirt and grim and make it near impossible to get out.  So what do we use to get into the grooves?  We have extremely sophisticated equipment that is specially made to reach down and clean all that gunk out.  That’s right; a toothbrush.  These are perfectly designed for a myriad of cleaning projects, especially when it comes to restoration.

Ocean Inspired Drawer Pull

This is a great accent piece on any dresser or nightstand, as well as cabinets and drawers in your kitchen.  Simple little extras such as these can really add a little something extra to make a room feel cozier and more personable.  This would also be  wonderful element to have in your beach house, or any other coastal inspired dwelling.  With so many different finishes to offer, this is a wonderful choice for even the pickiest home decorator.

Where would you feature this piece in your home?  Would you use it as an accent piece on certain cabinets, or would you create a uniform theme? If so, send us a picture and we will put your home online – you could be famous!

Unlike metal hardware that can become dented or scratched over time, glass offers a timeless beauty that will be a subtle but elegant addition to your home.

Since knob construction can vary some types may offer a base in a variety of different finishes that can be coordinated to doorknob sets, faucets, hinges, etc. that are not being replaced. Popular finishes include Polished Brass, Antique Brass, Polished Chrome, Brushed Nickel and Oil Rubbed Bronze.

Installing new knobs on your cabinets and drawers is a simple process that typically takes only a few minutes. Knobs can either be designed with the bolt going through the knob from the front and attaching with a nut on the interior of the cabinet or they can be a rear mounting system where a bolt is screwed into the base of the knob from the inside of the cabinet or drawer. If bolts are too long or short they can be cut to size or easily replaced at a local hardware store.

Coordinate your home further and create a new theme with glass by installing glass doorknob sets and window tie backs as well. A simple way to updating the look of any room is replacing older and worn hardware and giving new life to the older furniture and doors in your home. Nickel and Chrome Cabinet Knobs and Pulls

leave a comment »

Solid Brass Ornate French Leaves Pull (Polished Chrome Finish)

Nickel and Chrome cabinet hardware has been a popular choice for kitchens and bathrooms because it is easy to match with most existing hardware (such as faucets) and appliances. Chrome has been popular in the United States since the 1930’s and has remained popular because of its resistance to tarnish. Nickel finishes can vary from polished (shiny) to a brushed (matte) tone and is a nice choice because it does not usually require extra maintenance. Nickel and chrome cabinet knobs offer a wide variety of designs and styles to choose from and can be used to create or enhance your existing decorating theme.

When deciding between nickel and chrome finishes it is important to keep in mind other hardware in the room and create a common theme. Brushed nickel finishes can vary more than polished chrome between manufacturers so it is sometimes more difficult to match individual pieces in this finish (although an exact match is not necessary to create a common theme and varying the colors slightly can add extra interest to a room rather than keeping all of the hardware the same). Brushed (or satin) nickel finishes offer the advantage of being more resistant to showing use (such as fingerprints) or natural wear and tear (like scratches) over time because of the more muted color.

Satin Nickel Infinity Knob

Replacing your existing cabinet knobs and pulls with chrome or nickel knobs offers a great opportunity to update your kitchen and bathroom (or any other room in your house!) with new and exciting patterns and designs. Although sometimes considered more modern or contemporary in nature, chrome and nickel finishes are available in a range of designs from simple to extremely ornate. Simply replacing the knobs can bring a new and fresh look to your home without needing to redecorate the entire house. Introducing polished chrome or nickel doorknob sets and lighting is a great way to further enhance your theme and create a more unified look.

Nickel and Chrome cabinet hardware is a wonderful way to replace your older hardware and create an exciting new look for your home. Search for solid brass construction to ensure high quality and strength and be sure to ask questions. Many cabinet knobs available have coordinating or complementary pulls available as well. LookInTheAttic & Company offers a wide selection of great chrome and nickel knobs as well as doorknob sets, window and home hardware – they also offer free design assistance and help. Choosing new hardware for the home is a fun and creative way to reflect your unique personality in unexpected places.

Cast Iron and Solid Brass H and HL Hinges

Cast Iron HL Hinge

Choosing the right hinge for your home improvement project is an important step. Depending on the application, not all hinges are interchangeable so it is vital to check the size, style and quantity of hinges previously used before selecting a replacement. H and HL hinges are typically used on lighter doors or when space available for hinges is limited. An HL hinge provides addition support when they are used for heavier doors.

The type of material used for hinge construction can make a real difference in quality so look for cast iron or solid brass to ensure durability and strength over time. H and HL hinges are available in flush mount and offset – a flush mount hinge is required when the cabinet door is flush with the frame and offset hinges are used when the door is on the frame itself (a standard offset is 3/8 inches). These hinges are surface mounted and will screw directly into the wood.

Cast Iron H Hinge (Offset)

The number of hinges required for a door depends on the size and weight of the door. Larger or heavier doors require more hinges to operate correctly and not fall off. Doors that are less than 40 inches tall and weigh less than forty pounds usually only require two hinges – this includes most standard cabinet doors. Consult with a contractor if you are unsure about the number if hinges you should use. When replacing older hinges make sure to follow a few simple steps. First, replace your hinges when they become loose or no longer open and close the door smoothly. Second, replace all the hinges on a single door at the same time to ensure proper functioning.

LookInTheAttic & Company offers a wide variety of H and HL hinges in cast iron and solid brass. Hinges are available in a variety of sizes from 3 inches to 7 inches and most are available in flush mount and offset
