Antique and Victorian Style Door Hinges

leave a comment »

When you hear the word ‘Victorian’ in relation to anything architectural or decorative chances are you mine immediately creates the image of something very elaborate or elaborately decorated.  The Victorian era was filled with people trying to constantly outdo each other when it came to buildings and decorating your home, resulting in flourishes and carving and embellishments on everything possible.  Items that were previously only made very simply, like door hinges and door knobs, were soon exhibiting much more intricate designs.  While some items received more attention to detail than others, particularly larger furniture pieces, it was obvious that attention was being paid to every item now instead of just a select few.

Door hinges were always something that was seen as nothing more than a functional necessity in homes, and no one ever really thought to add any sort of design element to them.  Fortunately someone soon realized how much of an improvement a little detail could make in a home and started decorating every piece of hardware, particularly door hinges.

The trick of the hinges is that the designs that were so carefully carved and embossed on them could only be seen when the doors are open, which leads people to have a more open and inviting home.  The more decorative hinges someone has in their home, the friendly and more generous they were thought to be.

More From The Pot O’ Gold

leave a comment »

Here is another wonderful piece from our own pot of gold that we were fortunate enough to win in the most recent auction. This piece will be a little harder to market, since it’s more of a specialized piece, but I think the market is big enough that it won’t be too difficult to get a broad audience for it.

After all, flowers have been well loved for centuries, and often has special meaning for a variety of people. The design does limit the versatility of the piece slightly, but opens up several options that weren’t there before. A piece like this, perhaps in a different finish, or even an enamel one, would look absolutely darling in a nursery, or a little girl’s room. It is the type of piece that she probably wouldn’t grow out of, and would make a wonderful accent to the piece to hand down to her daughters or grand daughters one day.

Flower Knob

This would also be a wonderful piece to brighten up an otherwise dull kitchen, bathroom, or even guest bedroom. Floral motifs are becoming increasingly popular, and are extremely easy to accessorize. The trouble with designs like this can be an abundance of items available, and this can lead to an overwhelming feeling, especially when you are trying to find just the right piece to make the room complete, or just the right design to truly match a floral bedspread or curtains.

This piece would also look great on a potting table, or in a gardening shed for anyone that has a love of gardening and flowers. Perhaps they have a space dedicated in their garage just for their hobby and need a sturdy yet whimsical design to compliment it. This flower drawer pull is the perfect accent to finish the space. This will be available in a variety of finishes as well, ensuring the most versatility for it.

Twisted Iron Drawer Pull

Well, this is probably the most basic drawer handle we’ve featured yet, and the oldest to boot.  This piece was in the same box as the really old door handle, and I’m willing to bet that these two pieces came from the same place.  Of course, we still don’t know exactly when or where they are from, but it’s been fun guessing and creating histories for these two pieces.

This one, we have decided, is more in the range of 120 years old, and was used on an older model of cabinetry, similar to a more primitive filing cabinet. It was three drawers high, made of solid, sturdy wood, and was used to store the store’s books; anything from receipt books, credit logs, inventory lists, and the like.  A cabinet like that would have needed a sturdy handle on it, yet one that was easy to remove and repair if it broke.

Twisted Iron Drawer Pull

This handle is made of  cast iron, which despite it’s weight, was a very popular choice for cabinetry hardware in it’s day.  It was easy to create, and therefore easy and affordable to repair, and probably the most durable metal out there when cared for properly.  It’s simple construction allowed the handle itself to be removed easily for proper cleaning and maintenance.

This piece, with it’s simplistic twisted design, while be extremely easy for us to get ready to mold, as the deconstruction process is extremely short.  The three piece design makes it even easier to install in any piece in your home or business, and would be a great accent piece on even the most modern piece of furniture.  This piece will be offered in a variety of finishes to satisfy even the most sophist aced decorator’s palette.  Polished brass probably will not  be offered; I don’t think the design suits that finish very well at all.

Cool, Weird – Unknown Rusty Piece #1

leave a comment »

If you read my last post, then you know all about the box full of rusty objects that we were digging through. We’ve still only just begun, but there are so many things in here that we thought it might be a good idea to just start talking about them in the hopes that we would get feedback.

In short; we need your help figuring out what the purpose is of these, assuming there is one. We know all of our fabulous readers would be more than happy to help use figure this out!

Here goes item number one:

This piece, albeit very rusty, is probably made of bronze or copper alloy. It is about five and a half inches long, and just about two and a half inches at its highest point. It does have a slight arch to it, though that is hard to see by the photograph. We’re thinking it might be some sort of drawer pull, but it is relatively shallow, and hard to get a good grip on it. It does have a spot for a nail on either end, at least that is what i’m guessing those holes are for. It kind of reminds me of the old fashioned bottle openers, like the ones that you would find on old Coke machines, but I don’t think it’s strong enough for that, and much older. What do you think?

Unknown Rust #1

We know we still have a good bit of cleaning to do to this piece, as we have yet to positively identify the metal it is made of. We are working on finding the right tools to best clean in the groves while still maintaining the integrity of this piece. As soon as we clean it up enough, we will start creating the mold and discussing finish options.

Auction Box Special #2 – Latch

with 2 comments

Here is another excellent piece from the same auction box that led us to discover the flower hooks that we told you about. We don’t know the history of this particular piece, but we did hear that about six months prior to this box being pieced together there was a large fire that spread through several older homes in the area. The exact cause of the fire has not been determined, but investigators speculate that it was caused by a faulty space heater. This latch, however, remains – and it is quite nice.

We contacted the thrift store that provided the auction that we won, and they were able to give us a little bit of history of the area that most of these items may have come from. Although they didn’t obtain the person’s information that donated them, they do know a few things about them for certain.

Latch

First off, and most importantly, we know that this is an original piece from a home in the historic district. It was used as a latch on a stand alone pantry door, and was meant to keep unwanted pests, like young children sneaking a sweet treat, out of the staple foods that many people relied on. This type of latch is seen quite often today on different types of furniture.

This is a very functional and easy to manipulate latch, and is the perfect piece to secure many different type of cabinetry and storage devices. It’s a classic piece that will never go out of style no matter what piece of furniture you put it on! Of course, this latch would also work well on the inside of a door – such as a bathroom or bedroom – for a bit more privacy.

This piece is extremely versatile, and will be easy to recreate in several different finishes. It’s hard to guess which one will be the most popular choice, but if i had to guess I would say the oiled bronze; what do you think? Perhaps Antique Copper? Or simply Antique Brass – yes, that would be nice.

Finding Craftsman Style Hardware for Your Home

leave a comment »

If a home renovation project is in your near future, you may want to take a close look at the different options available to you. If you live in a house of a particular style you may wish to restore it to its natural appearance. When it comes to replacing door hardware, it can be difficult to find the original pieces still intact. Even when you are able to find them, they are often quite costly. You may be willing to pay the high prices and if so, there is certainly nothing wrong with that but there are options.

Many of the hardware styles of previous eras have remained so popular they are now reproduced. Craftsman Hardware is among these and may be more easily accessible than you think.

Craftsman Mail Slot

Craftsman Mail Slot

Craftsman style hardware possesses specific elements of design that set it apart from almost all other architectural styles. These pieces were hand-made and contained some natural flaws that have become their trademark in terms of appearance. The focus on these qualities emphasized these imperfections and helped make them quite popular. While earlier Victorian hardware was prized for its ornate qualities and near perfections, this style of hardware featured rough finishes and textured patterns all using materials that included hand crafted metal and wood work.

Craftsman style homes can still be seen in America today and are focused on a more efficient design instead of sheer beauty. This is because the families who originally inhabited them were middle class. Here servants would not have been necessary or even affordable and these homes would not have possessed the exquisite qualities of other styles of previous eras.

Craftsman style hardware can be used in a number of areas throughout the home. Door hardware is among its uses and includes a wide variety of door knobs for any room in the home as well as the doors leading to the outside of the residence. This hardware is functional in design while lacking ornate details. It can, however, be an elegant and beautiful addition to any home with patterns that will show unique textures not available on other styles.

These pieces are easy to come by and will give your home a new look while accentuating and older style that remains unforgotten even today.
